Building stronger communities for better tomorrow.

Haiti imported eighty-five percents of its food supply from outside mostly in United State. What is happening to farming in Haiti? Where are the farmers? Why is the country importing products that it should have being exported? Such as rice, corn, pea, meat, etc.

Several reasons may explain why the country has lost its capacity in terms of agriculture, lack of resources, the interests of farmers, and the inability of the land to produces sufficient yields.

Over the years a majority of Haitian farmers abandoned their land and make their way to Port-au-Prince the Capital of Haiti with high expectation for new opportunity.

They have abandoned they hometowns because the soils can no longer produces substantial goods. Their plantations are either being ravaged by hurricanes, or eaten by insects. Unable to produces sustainable crops to support their family those who remained behind cut down the trees and turn them into charcoal as a mean to support their loved one.

Ignored by the authorities, trees cutting have become the only way of life for the peasants. Cutting trees to produce charcoal is usually regarded as the only means of survival for the peasants and the country as whole relies on the charcoal to prepare their foods.

All that remains today is none other than a dry land and a vast desert due to the destruction of trees. Only 3% of trees are preserved and enable residents to find shade beneath the sun and protect the soil against floodwater whether it is natural or caused by hurricanes. The destruction of trees has created Soil Erosion, which become an enormous problem for the Island poorest country.
